The purpose of the Mary, the First Disciple program is for young Catholics in grades seven to ten to learn more about Mary and more about themselves. The four chapters in the program book offer young people an opportunity to learn about the Blessed Virgin Mary and gain insights into their relationship with God, Mary and the saints, their families, friends, and the world around them. An adult moderator helps guide the students throughout the program. The Marian Medal Project Book, Leader's Guide, and the medal and patch award package can be ordered from the Diocesan Catholic Committee on Scouting, care of the Office for Catechesis - Ministry to Youth and Young Adults. The Mary the First Disciple medal and patch are traditionally presented annually on the last Sunday of April at the Cathedral in Springfield after successful completion of the program and certification by the parish.
